What is an actuary?

Actuaries evaluate risk and opportunity – applying mathematical, statistical, economic and financial analyses to a wide range of business problems to make educated recommendations for future action.

Actuarial skills in data analysis and management, risk management and databased decision making are vital in many industries.

You’ll find actuaries working in insurance, superannuation, wealth management, investments, health financing and banking, as well as new, high-growth fields, such as data analytics, energy resources and the environment. Many actuaries also hold executive positions in the operational management of financial institutions.

An actuary must hold suitable qualifications from the Institute of Actuaries of Australia (IAA) or Actuaries Institute.

So how do we help our clients?

Thomson Actuarial clients come from all walks of life – and that’s what we enjoy most. There is no ‘typical day’. In the space of a week we could be assisting a small business with financial contract negotiations, guiding a client through valuation of assets and liabilities or acting as an expert witness for a life insurance claim. Sometimes there’s even a spot of lecturing for trainee actuaries.
